Navigating Big Emotions:

Yours & Theirs

You’re not alone.

If you’re navigating big emotions in your home, this space is here to help you stay grounded, respond with wisdom, and keep moving forward—one calm choice at a time.

When Anger Lives Under Your Roof

A Proverbs reflection for moms and wives who want to stay grounded, wise, and calm.

— When God says in Proverbs, “Don’t be friends with people who become angry easily.” do you think of someone under your own roof?

— When you read “Don’t stay around quick-tempered people” do you think, then where can I go?

— Do you take seriously the warning “…If you do, you may learn to be like them…

…Then you will have the same problems they do”?

In a household when a child (especially teens & young adults) and/or spouse is easily angered & quick-tempered this verse is instructive.

As a mom & wife I can easily “learn to be like them” and become quick-tempered, myself.

This verse is a warning for those of us who are moms and wives whose tendency is to keep trying to either please an easily angered child or husband to diffuse the anger, as well as those of us who tend to confront them directly, pushing back on the angry outbursts. (I’ve been both of these, btw.)

So what’s the alternative?

This is what I’ve learned through many prayers and God’s guidance:

We start by making space — getting not merely physical distance, but also emotional distance so we can protect ourselves from reactive anger & bitterness.

This may look like giving yourself a time out in a different room or going for a long walk or drive.

It may mean moving out for a few days or weeks.

It can be vastly different depending on your particular situation. But the principle…the warning…is the same —

Pause.
Detach.
Observe.

These first steps can bring a degree of peace and clarity that will inform your next steps.
